Structural Engineer – Should I go to school?

mid-level jobs
Sravu asked:

I have a masters in Structural Eng. and a bachelors in civil eng. My whole education has been in India. My work experience which was also in India(~1.5 years) is in design of power plants and its structures. It involved extensive usage of STAAD pro and AutoCAD. My last job was about 2 yrs ago. I could not work earlier because of visa but now I can.

My target jobs are entry to mid level structural engineer. I had a couple of interviews that went well but the employers were concerned because I did not have knowledge of building codes used in USA. I was told the only way to learn them is either at work or go back to school. I could not write EIT because the evaluation said I dont have enough credits in social studies !!! No body teaches social studies in asia.

I already have a Masters and do not want to do a PhD or another masters. Should I keep looking? I live in Atlanta, GA and would like to know if I could take any courses that helps me in learning codes and also take EIT – TIA.

you should totally go to school and take the classes that you need…if anything it will enhance your knowledge

why wait for an oppurtunity when you are not sure if you’re going to get one?

Very limited class content on building codes. You should check curriculum before wasting your time. Pursue the EIT before anything else. You could probably take the social studies classes during a summer semester if you cram. The building codes you can learn on your own.

Check out this site for great information on codes. They also have code question of the week. Lots of resources on learning building codes. Good luck.
