Comrad Ears asked:
I am cosidering taking another job and it would be at a higher level, ie entry level to mid-level. I make 42k now, would asking for 50k be too much? I’m seeing mid-levels in environmental consulting making anywhere from 35k to 90k depending on location. Or should I go higher?
i have 5 years experience

How many years experience do you have at the entry level? If more than 2-3, I don’t think asking for a 20% salary bump is out of line. It is hard to answer you not knowing more specifics. With environmental geology, salaries are a lot more locally influenced.
It depends on a few factors.. Do you have a degree in environmental consulting, or geology? If so from where? How long have you been working in this field? What is your work record like? The money your are seeking may be out of line if your experience does not warrant the bump in pay.
When I got my present job, I didn’t value myself enough. If you live in California or another state with relatively high wages, then it wouldn’t hurt to ask for more. You have to realize though that the more you ask for in compensation, the more they will expect in your output. Good luck
