Derek asked:

I am a Junior at the University of Houston, majoring in Accounting. my GPA is 3.15. I just received an Internship from a private corporation, which i am grateful for. I know the best route to take upon graduation is to take a job at one of the Big 4 Accounting firms. My question for those of you who are experienced is, would it make a dramatic difference if you took your first post graduation job at a mid sized CPA firm, opposed to Big 4? I know big 4 is the best, but it seems impossible to get into unless you know someone who is already in. And what about industry accounting?

buddy209 asked:

I knew all along that I shouldn’t put off finishing a degree.
Took various computer classes in the 80′s and early 90′s to keep up on emerging new trends but plateaued with what I needed to get by with the job I had and the boss’ limited investment in technology. Rather than finish the degree and move on to better jobs I became an integral, ensconsed, and depended upon employee who enjoyed my autonomy too confortably. Then one day the 2 partners I was an admin asst to announced on a Thur am that the following daythat they would be closing the doors, walking away before the wolves set in and forclosed on mounting outstanding debts. We had 24 hrs notice to take our personal belongings out while we could. No obsticles have been put in place to interupt what unemploymnt we got or job referrals . But having been burned out of business after over 30 years I hoped that I could put my developed skills as an admin asst to use in some other industry but can’t get my foot in the door. Any advice?

I’ve currently been out of work for 8 months. I am a mid-level admin and have been applying for this type of position every week. I only apply to the jobs I know I am qualified for. I have emailed my resume and sent a hard copy to the offices. I know I could call the HR department more often but is there anything else I can do. I have had others look at my resume and tell me that it is good, so why no call backs. Anyone have any tips?

I’m doing research on possible careers in corporate finance. I’m trying to formulate a plan to get from point A (entry level) to point Z (executive level) but don’t know what types of jobs would be considered entry level, mid level executive level. Nor what degrees/licenses I need besides the Series 7 and 66 which I have. I’M NOT LOOKING FOR WAYS TO MAKE MONEY, QUICKLY, SLOWLY FROM HOME ETC. I DO NOT CARE ABOUT HOW MUCH MONEY YOU MAKE AND I DON’T WANT LINKS TO WEBSITES TELLING ME HOW I CAN MAKE MONEY, (I’LL REPORT IT AS ABUSE). I do want to hear about your experiences in corporate finance/investment banking/fund managing etc…. I am particularly interested in how you went from an entry level position (which was what?) to where you are now (which is what?) and what you ultimately want to do. Is it even possible to go from being a 20-something with a degree in anthropology to a 30/40/50-something Treasurer for a large Corporation?
