They will most definitely contact them asking about your performance and attendance, all the sorts of things you get asked about on an interview, and this will be all before they even consider you for the job. If you're seriously considering moving to another city, I'd be up front with your boss. Going behind his/her back will only **** them off and they won't be very helpful getting you where you want.
