Applying for a different job within the same company?

mid-level jobs
LM asked:

I am currently employed as a mid-level employee (not a manager, but not a sales associate either) at a retail store owned by a large national corporation. I am seeking to relocate to the city where the corporation’s headquarters are located and am interested in several positions that are available at the head office.

However, I do not want my current supervisor to know that I am looking for a new job. I am worried that if I’m considered for the position, the people from the head office will contact my current boss without telling me (despite the fact that the position I would be applying for is completely different from the one I currently hold). Does anyone know what the protocol is in situations like this? Do I have a good reason to be nervous?

There is no way for you to switch positions without them contacting your current boss. If you’re seriously considering moving to another city, I’d be up front with your boss. Going behind his/her back will only **** them off and they won’t be very helpful getting you where you want.

I’m in the same boat, and it is absolutely necessary that you tell your immediate supervisor, even your manager. They will most definitely contact them asking about your performance and attendance, all the sorts of things you get asked about on an interview, and this will be all before they even consider you for the job.
