I am in my mid 20s considering job opportunities in Singapore. I would like to weigh my options in terms of career vis a vis cost of living in the country.

I am a little torn about job possibilities. I currently work for a large government agency, and I really enjoy the job. I get along well with my bosses and most coworkers and only slightly annoyed with one coworker (person’s work ethic is terrible). I have been with the agency for only a year and a half and have only been in this particular position for about 6 months. I am content with my salary although I think the coworker with terrible work ethic makes as much as I do yet I have more experience and more education directly related to the job. I do not think there is much job growth here, and I am only in my mid-20s. Another possibility has come about where I would make more money per day but it is less money yearly. However workdays drop from 261 a year (the 10 federal holidays) to 210 days a year with the other job. The other job also would use more of my skills related to a grad degree I’m working on now and appears to have job growth. Is this worth changing jobs?
At 43 I can have a second career. I’ve always wanted to be a paramedic, but I’m not sure it’s appropriate, or I’ll be able to find work, since I’m a bit beyond the average rookie age. What’s the best and worst parts of the job, and what challenges could I face being a bit older (I’m in pretty good shape (can pass the RCMP PARE test) and am used to stressful situations)?
I’m in Alberta, Canada, where the provincial health agency (Alberta Health Services) runs the city and rural ambulances. There are also many opportunities in the oil and gas industry, and there are a few companies that do special events, etc.
The money’s OK – rookie EMTs make about $20/hour, and paramedics make up to $30/hour. Paramedics in private service make up to $600/shift. The money’s not the issue.
I’m concerned about the mental and physical stress. I know there’s a high rate of burnout. Why? And would being a bit older be an advantage or disadvantage in managing this?
